Why Should You Become a Pharmacy Technician?
In 2008, there were about 326,300 Pharmacy Technicians according to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics. About 75 percent of jobs were in a retail setting, and about 16 percent were in hospitals. Employment of Pharmacy Technicians is expected to increase by 31% from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
As cost-conscious insurers begin to use pharmacies as patient-care centers and pharmacists become more involved in patient care, Pharmacy Technicians will continue to see an expansion of their role in the pharmacy. In addition, they will increasingly adopt some of the administrative duties that were previously performed by pharmacy aides, such as answering phones and stocking shelves.
The average (median) wage for a Pharmacy Technician range from $28,000 per year to $38,500 per year, making it a highly attractive career. Certified Pharmacy Technicians can expect to earn more than non-certified technicians. Some technicians belong to unions representing hospital or grocery store workers.
Job opportunities for pharmacy technicians are expected to be exceptional, especially for those with previous experience, formal training, or certification. Job openings will result from employment growth, as well as the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force.
Pharmacy Technicians also assist licensed pharmacists in dispensing medication and other healthcare products to patients - they also perform almost every function in the pharmacy.
A Pharmacy Technician takes care of many of the day-to-day operations of a pharmacy, leaving a pharmacist free for more critical operations. Technicians usually perform routine tasks, such as help prepare prescribed medication for patients, count tablets, answer telephones, receive written prescriptions, verify written prescriptions, take refill requests and much more.
